Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder, commonly known as PTSD, is a mental health condition that may impact the lives of people who have experienced trauma. Symptoms of PTSD may include flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, isolation, and avoidance. PTSD can have a significant impact on a person’s day-to-day functioning, relationships, and quality of life.1
When traditional treatments for PTSD, such as antidepressants, anxiety medications, and talk therapy do not provide adequate resolution of their symptoms, patients may turn to less traditional treatments. Dr. Cohen has had success in employing Ketamine Therapy and Brain Stimulation to help patients cope with traumatic memories and triggers and live happier, more fulfilled lives.1
Treatment-Resistant Depression
Treatment-resistant depression is a very common mental health condition in the United States: in 2021, up to 61% of adults experienced at least one major depressive episode.2 Many of these people experienced multiple episodes or long-term depression. Still, despite the prevalence of major depressive disorder, some patients are unable to find treatment that consistently improves their symptoms.
For patients with treatment-resistant depression, the benefits of Ketamine Therapy can be nearly immediate, and symptom reduction can endure for months after treatment.3 Dr. Cohen also utilizes Brain Stimulation (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, TMS) to treat major depression. This treatment chantes neuronal activity in the areas of the brain responsible for mood and pain.4
Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder, which used to be referred to as manic-depressive disorder or manic depression) is a mental health condition that causes a person’s mood, energy, and activity levels to shift. People with bipolar disorder experience manic episodes, where they feel energized, very happy, or irritable that can quickly shift to depressive episodes leaving them feeling very sad and hopeless.5
Many people diagnosed with bipolar disorder are able to achieve symptom reduction with mood stabilizer and antidepressant medications, but these medications may come with undesirable side effects or lose efficacy over time. For these patients, Brain Stimulation (TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) and Ketamine Therapy may help them experience relief so that they can lead happier and more productive lives.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that is characterized by recurring, uncontrollable thoughts (obsessions) as well as repetitive behaviors called compulsions. Symptoms and behaviors associated with OCD can be extremely time-consuming, stigmatizing, and can have a significant effect on day-to-day functioning as well as professional and social interactions.
People diagnosed with OCD benefit from therapy that helps them recognize harmful thoughts and behaviors, then reframe their reactions to them. Medication is also helpful for OCD, especially antidepressants that target serotonin. Still, many patients with OCD still find it difficult to fully manage their symptoms with therapy and medication alone. The FDA approved Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS, Brain Stimulation) therapy for treatment-resistant OCD in 2018.6 Patients also find Ketamine Therapy to be a highly effective and beneficial treatment for OCD.
Functional Neurological Disorder
Functional neurologic disorder (FND) is also referred to as conversion disorder. This is a group of neurological disorders that result from abnormalities in brain function that alter the way the brain sends and receives signals. Individuals with a functional neurological disorder experience nervous system symptoms such as unplanned movements, difficulty walking, and changes to senses such as touch and hearing.8
Many people who have been diagnosed with a functional neurologic disorder have experienced trauma or abuse in the past. Treatment for functional neurological disorders often involves education, therapy, and mental health medications. For some, however, these traditional treatment options do not help them overcome reactions to their traumatic past that may be contributing to their symptoms. In such cases, Ketamine Therapy and Brain Stimulation can be highly effective in breaking detrimental patterns.
Anxiety Disorder
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that is characterized by recurring, uncontrollable thoughts (obsessions) as well as repetitive behaviors called compulsions. Symptoms and behaviors associated with OCD can be extremely time-consuming, stigmatizing, and can have a significant effect on day-to-day functioning as well as professional and social interactions.A number of disorders fall under the umbrella of “Anxiety Disorder,” including panic disorder, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, and phobias. People with these mental health conditions may experience persistent anxiety or dread, restlessness, fatigue, irritability, trouble concentrating, and even psychosomatic symptoms such as headaches and pain. Anxiety disorders are more than occasional nerves: they are often pervasive to the extent that relationships, job performance, and other key facets of life are disrupted.7
Like other mental health conditions, conventional treatments for anxiety disorders include therapy and medications such as anti-anxiety medications, antidepressants, and benzodiazepines. These medications can cause unpleasant side effects, are potentially habit-forming, and may not provide sufficient relief for people struggling with anxiety disorders. These people are increasingly turning to newer treatments, including Brain Stimulation and Ketamine Therapy, to help them manage their anxiety more effectively.
